Barkuma was established in 1994 to give the local Indigenous community a place of identity, support and a place to go for help and assistance hense the name ‘Barkuma’, an aboriginal word meaning help and assist. The community chose the Sea Turtle as Barkuma’s logo as the Sea Turtle struggles to swim against the current to get where it is going. Barkuma is located in the City of Greater Cessnock LGA. The City has two main townships, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri, with much of the population concentrated in a thin urban belt between these. Located in Lang Street, Kurri Kurri takes into account seven districts: Abermain, Heddon Greta, Kurri Kurri, Neath, Pelaw Main, Stanford Merthyr and Weston. The population of the Kurri Kurri area is estimated at 14,000 Kurri Kurri is a mainly residential area with some industrial land use in the north western section. Kurri Kurri is bounded by the Kurri Kurri East small area in the north and east, generally by Mulbring Street in the south and the Weston small area in the west.
